Vomiting & Diarrhea...Home or Hospital care?
Many of us have heard the term acute gastroenteritis, or the term "you've contracted the stomach bug". Acute gastroenteritis, often called the "stomach flu," is a common condition characterized by diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, and sometimes fever. While medical attention is crucial in severe cases, several organic home remedies can help manage symptoms and promote a faster recovery. This brings us to the question. Do we need to seek professional medical care or can we treat it at home? The most common response would be to seek medical advice as soon as symptoms are evident. Giardia, Cyclospora, Cryptosporidium, and worms, just to name a few. All of which may or may not present different types of diarrhea and other symptoms.
A medical approach will do great at diagnosing which type of parasite an individual may be infested with and thus render a more specific approach in eliminating the live parasites and/or the eggs or ovum. Whilst receiving medical treatment your diet may need to be adjusted. Here is where home remedies can play a significant role in both the treatment and recuperation process. Here are some of the basic at-home approaches.
Hydration is Key:
- Oral Rehydration Solutions (ORS): These solutions are available over-the-counter. They replenish essential electrolytes lost through diarrhea and vomiting.
- Clear Fluids: Sip on clear fluids like water, diluted fruit juices, and clear broths to prevent dehydration.
2. The BRAT Diet:
- The BRAT diet, consisting of bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast, is a gentle approach to reintroducing food. These bland foods are easy to digest and help soothe the irritated stomach.
3. Ginger:
- Ginger has anti-inflammatory and anti-nausea properties. Ginger tea, ginger ale, or chewing on fresh ginger can help alleviate nausea and stomach cramps.
4. Peppermint:
- Peppermint tea or peppermint candies can help relax the muscles of the digestive tract, reducing cramps and soothing an upset stomach.
5. Probiotics:
- Probiotics can help restore the balance of good bacteria in the gut, which can be disrupted by gastroenteritis. Yogurt and fermented foods like kefir are good sources of probiotics.
6. Rest and Relaxation:
- Getting plenty of rest allows your body to focus on healing. Avoid strenuous activities and listen to your body's signals.
Although not all cases of diarrhea require urgent medical attention, It is recommended to seek medical attention if one has 8-10 loose stools in 24 hours. The severity will vary from person to person. An early clinical approach can aid in determining the cause, initiation of the appropriate treatment, and replenishment of the lost fluids and electrolytes.
